LESSON 7 — STRUMMING
Now you have practiced all the individual sections - you can attempt to full in some of the strumming patterns below:
I would highly recommend play the entire song with quarter notes to help you memorise the chord progression without having to worry about strumming patterns at the same time. Once you become more familiar with the chords and the song structure - then have a go at adding some of the strumming patterns below.
You may be more familiar with 8th note strumming patterns if you have been playing ukulele for a while! Here are two basic strums that can help cement the song together - but please note that you will need to play them in double time for some parts. The first is a basic down, down up - down, down up strum and the 2nd the more popular strumming patterns for ukulele players and guitarists alike - it's known as the CALYPSO STRUM.
This 16th note strum, as you can see, is counted: 1 e + a 2 e + a 3 e + a 4 e + a (and if you count all of those you will find 16 potential strums)
This kind of strum works really well on chords that are played for full bars - for example, the G in 3rd position at the end of the intro section.
The thing with this kind of pattern is that you can get really creative - you can move some of the up and down strums about to suit your ears and even remove some of them for a lighter sounding strum.
