UCL2 - WEEK 4
"Everybody Hurts"
This week you will explore a fun triplet, arpeggiated finger picking exercise and put it into practice with the song, EVERYBODY HURTS by REM.
The song is in 4/4 time at 63BPM with a triplet feel for both the picking part and the strumming part. The original key as shown below, is played in D major. Once you learn the song in C major, you can simply put a capo on fret number 2 and play along.

AUDIO TRACKS
The audio play along tracks are a great way to help with home practice. Have a listen to the audio below with just the L2 Ukulele part, vocals and bass and try practicing along to it at home after your class session.
CHORDS
This arrangement is all about emotion and uses a good combination of major, minor and 7th chords.
LEFT HANDED CHORDS:
MAIN STRUMMING PATTERN
The main strumming pattern is a really basic pattern but works great with the triplet strumming pattern below. The temp is quite slow so to make this pattern sound effectively dynamic, try strumming beat one with your thumb and the rest of the pattern with your index finger.
PICKING PATTERN
Note how this pattern is written out in triplets. Which means for every 1 beat of the bar you will pluck 3 notes. Try saying the numbers out loud when you pluck - ONE AND A - TWO AND A - THREE AND A - FOUR AND A.
The letters underneath the picking patterns represent which fingers you should be pluvking with for the most effective results.
You can have a go at playing this picking pattern throughout the intro and also verse 3 if your'e feeling brave enough to make the switch - if not, no problem - just stick to the strumming pattern at V3.

Have a listen to the audio below. It plays one full bar of C as illustrated above, then you need to switch to the F major chord and pick out the same pattern. Repeat twice and you have the intro section complete!!
