UCL Level 2 [PART 2]
UCL Level 2.2: BASIC SKILLS [18+]
LOCATION: EASTFIELD PLAY CENTRE, 7 Eastfield Drive, Aigburth, Liverpool, L17 4LH
CLASS TIMES: TUESDAYS 7.30pm
START DATE: Tuesday, 21st January 2020 (see timetable for all times and dates)
GUIDED LEARNING HOURS: 9 plus live performance at exclusive venue during week 10.
THANKS for choosing UCL to further expand your ukulele playing skills and music learning adventures.
This course is designed for the ukulele player who has either completed the UCL level 2.1 ukulele course and is hoping to advance further or those who have at least 12 months ukulele playing experience and training. See the course content below for a detailed view of the course content and refer to the UCL Level 2.1 course content to make sure you have covered all of the basic key training elements at this level if you are new to UCL.
Once you have booked you will receive an email confirming your booking along with a membership form that should be completed and brought along to your first session, terms and conditions and some top tips on how to prepare for the course.
Approximately 2 weeks before the course commences you will receive a further email with information on how to set up your UCL website account from where you will be able to access all course materials for the duration of the 10 weeks along with a link to a Closed Facebook Group where you can communicate with your class and course leader outside of club hours if required. You can also email us at firstname.lastname@example.org if you prefer not to use Facebook.
The final week is where you get to meet up with all other UCL members at our exclusive venue to showcase you new skills. Friends and family are welcome to attend these events.
During this 10 week course you will explore at least 6 classic songs from a range of music genres and practice the following:
- Riffs & Solos
- Some Advanced Strumming Techniques
- Moveable Chords & Scales
- Some Advanced Chord Shapes
- More Finger Picking Patterns
- 2 - 3 Part Song Arrangements
- Walk Downs, Turn Arounds and Alternative Endings
- Pentatonic Scales
- Singing & Harmonising
- Song Sheet Study
SINGING: At this level, some singing is required. You will learn the main melody lines for each of the songs selected and harmonies on some of them.
COURSE MATERIAL: To access the course material you will need to set up an account via this website. You will receive an invite link to set up your account approximately one week before the course commences. This is where you will be able to view any associated video tutorials and download all course materials, including PDF worksheets, song-sheets and MP3 downloads. You are responsible for printing and storing your own PDF sheets prior to each class. It is essential that you bring all course material to each class so get yourself a folder.
COURSE COMMUNICATION: You will receive a link to join a Closed Facebook Group via email approximately one week before the course commences. A closed group means that only members of your class and the class leaders can access the group. This is where you can contact us out of club hours, chat ukulele with your classmates and find out about all UCL out of hours activities and events. HOME PRACTICE: We recommend that you practice each of the exercises you are shown in class as often as you can in between weekly sessions. A minimum of 2, 30 minute daily practice sessions are a superb way to help you develop the essential muscle memory required to enhance your playing skills and technique. The video tutorials and audio MP3s are for assistance with your home practice, or if you miss a session, so use them to your advantage and log in regularly for updates. Keep your ukulele within reach for regular home practice sessions. Out of sight, out of mind.
END OF TERM CELEBRATION: During the final week of each term, all UCL Members gather for the UCL end of term celebration at our exclusive venue to showcase their new ukulele skills. There are three events throughout the year that coincide with the 3 terms; SPRING, SUMMER and the final FESTIVE CELEBRATION. Friends and family are very welcome to attend. Tickets will be available at least two weeks prior to each event and booking is essential. Each event features a fundraising raffle to assist some fantastic charitable courses within the local region and guest appearances from local and national ukulele bands and artists. Flyers and posters will be available prior to each event so please share them and join the Facebook event pages to keep up to date with all event activity.
COURSE OUTCOMES: By the time you have completed this 10 week course you will have expanded your song repertoire enough to the able to join the UCL busking group and will have a better understanding of music theory, scales and most chord families with the ability to move around the fretboard and change chord positions more fluidly. You will develop better listening skills and group performance for 2-3 part arrangements and be confident with singing and harmonising on selected songs.
NEXT STEPS: Upon completion of this course you can apply to join the level 3 Intermediate course where you will work towards becoming a fully fledged member of the UCL performance group or if you feel like you could do with a bit more training at level 2.2 then you are very welcome to retake the same course again the following term. Each term consists of different song exploration so there will always be new content to learn.
