UCL 3 NEWS:
WHO CAN APPLY: 18+ who have completed UCL level 2.2.
COURSE CONTENT: During this 10 week course you will explore the UCL Festive repertoire in preparation for live gigs with extra rehearsal sessions to be allocated as necessary. There will be at least 3 brand new songs featured this term along with a load of old favourites with upgraded arrangements. We will be working towards a Halloween set in time for a potential 31st October busking/performance session plus a Christmas set in time for the UCL Festive Fundraiser and any Christmas events that we may be invited to play. We will be looking at a range of more advanced strumming techniques, vocal harmonies and more complex finger picking combinations. There will be some opportunities to get involved with some demo recordings this term. A few extra dates TBC for this.
COURSE OUTCOMES: By the time you have completed the course you will have increased your current repertoire, develop more confidence in rehearsing and performing live, gained new experiences in studio recording, expanded your skills and ability to explore more advanced music theory and you will have learnt some brand new finger picking techniques.
AMSTERDAM TRIP: As we will be heading offshore on a ukulele mini cruise during week 4 this term, there will be no sessions taking place that week so book on to come with us if you haven't already. There will be an extra rehearsal session during half term TBC.
SINGING: At this level, singing will be required for some songs. We will dedicate some time to harmonies during the 2nd half term with options to take solo lead on various songs throughout the term.
COURSE MATERIAL: The level 3 ukulele course comes with a number of media materials including the course timetable and itinerary, song sheets for sessions, PDF work sheets and all whiteboard notes, MP3 rehearsal tracks that you can download throughout the term to be used for evaluation and group feedback, and some video tutorials. You are responsible for printing and storing your own PDF sheets and it is essential that you bring all course material to all sessions.
COURSE COMMUNICATION: As usual we will use Facebook Closed Groups as a way to communicate outside of club hours. This is also where you will find course material available for download along with video tutorials. Once the course ends the closed group is deleted so make sure you download and print of course material beforehand. You will need to be connected to the internet when accessing FB closed group media. This is also a reliable way to catch up on any course content if you miss a class or two. You will receive a link for this group in an email after booking.
HOME PRACTICE: It is critically important that you dedicate time to home practice this term (and all others). The most pro-active way to do this is to break your practice sessions down into bitesized chunks and get into a routine with them. Maybe 10 mins in the morning just after breakfast (all you need to do is get up 10 mins earlier!) If you can sneak your uke into work - bonus, you got breaks and lunch hours to utilise! When you put the dinner on, go pick up your Uke whilst you're waiting for it to cook. Throw in another 15 mins after dinner. Before bed, take 15 minutes to assess what you still need to learn and recap the things you have been working on! Set yourself different tasks each day and if possible, get together outside of sessions with some of your band mates and have a jam!
But most importantly, remember that practice doesn't just mean rushing through the songs or exercises, it means stopping when you get to the parts that don't sound to great and figuring out why that is. Maybe you need to change your hand/finger positions or use a metronome to steady those rushed parts? Practice makes perfect.. nothing else... just practice.
PERFORMANCES: Gigs and events come up occasionally in which case extra rehearsal sessions will be added at no extra cost. Hoping to arrange a Halloween busking session or live performance of some kind with spooky fancy dress for 31st October so let me know if you are keen to get involved and any ideas welcome. The 4th December is currently the date set for the UCL Festive fundraiser at the Cricket Club so if you want to get more involved in the event organising & planning then you are all welcome. We may have Robin Evans as our Special Guests from outa town. He's the guy who won the Guinness World Record for marathon time ukulele playing... 32 hours straight I think!? Don't panic though he will just be doing a 30 minute set for us.
NEXT STEPS: Upon completion of this course you can extend your level 3 membership for another 3 months for more of the same but with a whole load of new songs from the UCL repertoire. WHO CAN APPLY: 18+ who have completed UCL level 2.1 and 2.2 and who are willing to perform live as a member of the UCL House Band for the SUMMER 2019 term.
