UCL PLAY (L3) - WEEK 5

"MAMMA mIA"

This weeks you will be diving another movie classic “MAMMA MIA" by ABBA from the self titled movie, MAMMA MIA. It’s a fun, yet intricate piece to play and sing that requires some technical dynamics to really give the song some rhythm and do it justice to the original.
We’ll be learning it in the key of D the same as the original song, with some new chords and a variety of strumming patterns, that you have likely tried before - The dramatic chord changes and upbeat tempo make it super fun to play.

About The Song

"Mamma Mia" became one of ABBA's signature hits and helped catapult the group into global superstardom. The title, inspired by the Italian expression for “My goodness!”, fits perfectly with the dramatic and emotional tone of the song. Initially wasn’t meant to be a single, but due to public demand (especially in Australia), it was released and the rest is pop history!

THE RIFFS

🎸 Choose Your Riff Style: High G or Low G There are two options for each riff section -
High G string and Low G string ukulele parts.
🔘 Use the buttons below to select the version that matches your uke.
👉 Bonus tip: Even if you’re playing a High G, you can still play the Low G verse and chorus riffs—they’ll sound great in a slightly different register!
In this arrangement, you’ll combine high and mid-range barre chords with melodic riffs to really make the song pop with colour and dynamics.
🎧 Have a listen to the full audio tracks below for each part, and don’t forget to download the PDFs to follow along!

RIFF BREAKDOWN

INTRO / SOLO / OUTRO SECTIONS

🎵 Let’s Ease In with the intro!
  • You need to wait for four bars before coming in at the intro
  • For the 1st Solo section - play just one round of 4 bars - straight in
  • For the outro section - wait 2 bars - then play the riff and end on a D chord - single strum

VERSE RIFF

You have a little bit of hanging around to do - as this riff is played at the end of both the 1st and 2nd line of the verse:

CHORUS RIFF

🪕 Melody Mode: This is where you combine playing the melody with the vocals to enhance the sound! Once this riff os over you'll ease in with single strums on D and D+ chords before finishing the section with the allocated rhythms.
