UCL2 - WEEK 4
"Everybody Hurts"

This week you will revisit the arpeggio finger picking exercise and put it into practice with the song, EVERYBODY HURTS by REM.
The song is in 4/4 time at 63BPM with a triplet feel for both the picking part and the strumming part. The original key as shown below, is played in D major. Once you learn the song in C major, you can simply put a capo on fret number 2 and play along.

CHORDS

This arrangement is all about the plucking so the chords will be kept as simple as possible as follows:

LEFT HANDED CHORDS:

PICKING PATTERN

This pattern takes place over one bar. The good thing about this song is that all chords play just one bar before moving onto the next all the way through.
Picture
Have a listen to the audio below. It plays one full bar of C as illustrated above, then you need to switch to the F major chord and pick out the same pattern. Repeat twice and you have the intro section complete!!

Strumming PATTERN

The strumming pattern is similar to a 3/4 Down, Down, Up, Down pattern, but you need to fir 4 of them into one bar. When you start strumming, it feels like the song speeds up but it is exactly the same speed as when you are picking.
Picture
Have a go at playing one bar of E7 followed by a bar of Am then repeat two more times. This will give you the first part of the bridge section. This strumming also comes in at the end of the song with C & F.

VIDEO TUTORIALS

THE VIDEO TUTORIALS WILL BE AVAILABLE WITHIN 24 HOURS OF YOUR CLASS SESSION TAKING PLACE.
The first thing to do is get used to playing the finger picking pattern without any chords so that it becomes second nature!! Watch the video below for a detailed breakdown.
Picture

INTRO | VERSE 1 | CHORUS | VERSE 2 | CHORUS

The intro contains one bar of [C] and [F] repeated twice. The same for the verse except repeated 4 times.
The chorus carries on with the same pattern except now the chords change to [Dm] & [G] played 3 times.
Then return to [C] and [F] repeated 4 times for verse 2 and then to another chorus as above.

BRIDGE SECTION

This is where the strumming pattern kicks in on [E7] followed by [Am] and repeated 3 times before strumming single strums on [Bb] for one bar, returning to the strumming pattern for [F] for one bar then back to single strums for the [Bb] ending with one single strum on [Gm]. This is the only time this chord appears in the song.

VERSE 3 | CHORUS | OUTRO SECTIONS

It's back to picking for verse 3 and the final chorus.

The outro begins with 4 bars of picking then goes into strumming before slowing down at the end on [C]

NB: The solo section is exactly the same as playing verse 1, 2 and the chorus again.
