UCL2 - WEEK 4
SONG 1 - ZOMBIE
SONG 2 - PEOPLE ARE STRANGE

Welcome to week 4. This week you will explore another two ghoulish songs for the halloween gigs coming up . . . Both song keys are in E Minor and use a mixture of strumming styles but contain just 4 chords per song as follows:
  • ZOMBIE (The Cranberries) Em, G, C, D
  • PEOPLE ARE STRANGE (The Doors) Em, Am, B7, G

FINGER GYM EXERCISE 1

Let's begin with a quick warm up, and remember to do some stretching and limbering up before you begin. This week you will practice at 90BPM

Use your PDF from week 1 for this exercise.

SONG 1 - ZOMBIE

This song contains four chords, Em, G, C and D. It works well with the single strums for quieter parts and calypso strumming for the busier parts, as illustrated on the song sheet. The chord pattern repeats chromatically for one bar each right the way throughout the song.

SONG 2 - PEOPLE ARE STRANGE

This song also contains 4 chords and is in the key of Em however, they are not played chromatically throughout so see the song sheet for more information.

There is a combination of strumming patterns and double down strums and 3 choices to play B7. Ideally if you are moving from a G to B7 - you can easily shift the whole G shape up to the GC & E strings for B7a. Otherwise if you are moving to or from an Em chords, try B7b as again, it is the same shape as Em but moved onto the GC & E strings.

VIDEOS

Video tutorials and play along tracks may take up to 24 hours to appear after your class taking place. If they are not yet available, please check back in as this is a great way to help with home practice.

EXTENDED CALYPSO STRUm

The extended calypso strum simply adds in an up strum between beats 1 and 2 to really drive the rhythm. If you know calypso, you should get this no problem.
In the verse sections, only the 1st bar plays the full pattern, but when you switch to Am you just play it for beat 1+2. On the + of 2, you should switch Back to Em.

EXERCISE: Watch the video below for instruction on how to play this strumming pattern and split it between two chords.
