WEEK 7
This week you will explore SILENT NIGHT using both tab and chords
Once you get your head around this you will be playing all kinds of melodies, which make a great accompaniment to the rhythm, or strumming.
It is important to understand the rhythmic value of notes so you get used to playing the timing of melody lines. A great way to begin it using a song you will be familiar with so that you can use your instinct when playing the individual notes. There are other factors to consider such as the TEMPO (Speed of the song) which is usually set in BPM (Beats per minute) and also the TIME SIGNATURE, which determines how many beats are in each bar, or the equivalent to the number of beats per bar.
You should have by now have already had a go at playing the C Major scale using the tab technique, so if you have managed to play that and understand the numbers, then you are half way there to playing a number of songs in the key of C which will use the same notes, but in alternative orders to create the specified melody lines.

SILENT NIGHT is a song in 3/4 time signature, which means each bar is counted in sets of 3. This is also known as WALTZ TIME. For this arrangement you will attempt to begin the song by splitting into two groups with one group playing melody (the tab) and the other the chords, so don't panic if you don't grasp reading tab right away. It can take some practice for absolute beginner, but give it a go as you may just surprise yourself.
Have a listen to the tab video demo below at 60BPM and see if you can make sense of the timing of the notes. On the tab sheet and in class you will be guided through which fingers to use to pluck each of the notes by the pink capital letters, and in brackets, the fingers to fret the specified notes with for ease of playing. Have a warm up with the C Major scale below before starting the tab exercise.

TAB DEMO @ 60 BPM
The audio track for the melody section below starts at 60BPM and with each round goes up by 5BPM so by the 5th round it will play to the full speed of the song at 80BPM. Practice with the tab demo above at 60BPM until you retain the correct fingerings for the tab and then work on your speed using the audio below.
The audio track below consists of the RHYTHM SECTION (or the strumming) and also starts at 60BPM gradually speeding up to 8-BPM by the 5th round.
