MODULE 9
RIFFS
In this module you will explore your first riff exercises. A riff is a short repeated phrase used in rock, popular and jazz music, frequently played over changing chords or harmonies or used as a background to a solo improvisation. You will be able to recognise many songs by their riffs.
EXERCISE: Have a listen to the audio tracks below and see if you can guess which songs they belong too:
RIFF 1
RIFF 2
RIFF 3
RIFF 1
If you guessed correctly, riff number 2 is from the classic hit song, Stand By Me, originally recorded by Ben E. King in the 1960s and again in the 70's by the Beatles. This is a great riff to learn and works well in two parts with the chords. In module 10 you will explore this song including the solo section.
EXERCISE: Always have a scan through the tab before starting any riffs to see where you can start your finger position. In this case, the riff jumps between fret 2 and 4 on the E and A string so you can start with your index above fret 2 position and play fret 4 with your ring finger. Watch out for fret on on the C string near the end of the riff.
