MODULE 3:
FAN STROKE
It’s difficult to pinpoint exactly where and when the fan stroke was developed, but we do know it was made popular back in early 20th century when the likes of Roy Smeck would utilise it to impress audiences of the stage and movies.
Ukulele virtuoso, Roy Smeck appeared in one of the very first ‘talky’ movies with sound in association with the Warner Brothers and their newly developed Vito-Phone recording equipment back in 1926 playing his ukulele in the short film, ‘His Pastimes’. He was also a devoted ukulele mentor and is said to have fathered a whole new generation of ukulele players through his instruction books, radio broadcasts and private tutoring, paving the way for UK superstar, George Formby. With over 500 recordings under his belt, Roy endorsed the Vita-Uke, a brand of ukulele released by the Harmony company in Chicago in 1925 and was himself endorsed by C. F Martin & Company. If you get the chance, watch the 1985 documentary, aptly titled ‘Wizard Of The Strings’.
