The Mersey Belles have taken the UK by storm recently, performing at some of the Northwest's most prolific ukulele festivals such as GNUF and Chester Strum as well as having Cerys Matthews shouting about them on her BBC 6 Music show and driving all over the country on a weekly basis to perform...

So just what is it that makes these two gals, known as Nancy and Pearl, so special when it comes to the ukulele scene? Could it be that timeless, vintage energy they produce with their song arrangements or the stunning harmonies they blend into the mix with that incredible vintage fashion sense they effortlessly don?! What ever it is we love it & we want more!!! Come see the Mersey's finest ukulele duo perform at the UCL ALL STARS Festive Fundraiser on 17th December in Liverpool. Have a listen their version of Britney Spears Toxic (available to buy on CD at the event!) and read what they got to say bout stuff :)

Interview Guide:
P = Pearl
N = Nancy

Q. How long have you been playing ukulele and why did you decide ukulele?

P. 2 ½ years

N. Same as above.

Q. What music influences you in general?

P. I love 1950’s jazz and rock n roll. I also love bluegrass and folk music and adore any music from Doris Day, Vera Lynn, Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald.

N.  I love pop music from all eras and particularly jazz music.

Q. How would you describe your sound?

P. Beautiful harmonies with the plinky plonk sound of sweet ukulele cutting through. Our sound has been described as: inventive, sweet sounding with a 21st century vintage twist.

"Their superb musicality and huge stage presence filled the auditorium and wrapped the audience in blanket of pure joy."
Quote by Tony Casey, Co-Director of Grand Northern Ukulele Festival

Q. Do you write your own songs or is this something you may consider for the future?

N. Yes we do, watch this space. 2015 we will be working on a full album.

Q. Please describe your overall experience at UCL

P. As a music leader I have loved every single minute of being part of UCL. It has been lovely seeing all the members progress in all areas of music. It makes me so proud to see what they have achieved in the last 1-2 years and I am really excited to share a stage with these awesome people who have the ability to make me smile every time I see them!

Q. Would you recommend learning the ukulele and if so why?

N. Yes, yes yes, it has been the best 2 years of our life’s picking up those ukuleles. It is easy to play, fun and sounds sweet.

P. And it’s wonderful to play with other people.

Q. Where can we find you playing outside of UCL?

N. Us Belles perform at many private and corporate events/functions, but will be gracing the stages of many festivals in 2015.  Here’s a few that have been confirmed:
  • A Uke weekend at the big house: 27th Feb- 1st Mar 2015
  • GNUF- Grand Northern Ukulele Festival: 22-24 May 2015
  • Festival of Firsts: 4-5 July 2015.

Q. What does the future hold for The Mersey Belles?

P. Lots more fun, road trips, song writing, laughing and of course entertaining the country with our quirky characters and sweet harmonies.

Q. What message or wise words would you like to send out into the world this Christmas?

N. Christmas is about being around people you love. Appreciate your family and friends and enjoy yourself from start to finish.

P. Merry Christmas from the Mersey Belles xxx
